How
does IMAX 3D work?
The first thing you must understand
is that we see in three dimensions
naturally. When looking at an
object, our two eyes see it from
two slightly different angles.
The brain fuses the two slightly
different images together to make
one three-dimensional image. This
is why we have depth perception
and can naturally determine how
far to reach when picking up objects
or how high to lift our feet when
walking up stairs. In order to
see a three-dimensional image
on screen, two separate images
are also required. The IMAX 3D
projector simultaneously projects
two strips of 15/70 film, one
for each eye, onto a special silver
IMAX 3D screen. Each strip of
film contains images from two
slightly different vantages. Each
member of the audience must wear
special 3D glasses, which channel
the right-eye image to the right
eye and the left-eye image to
the left eye. Your brain fuses
the two images together to create
a three-dimensional image. The
results make the screen virtually
disappear and the images seem
to float around the theatre.
Is
this the same 3D that uses the
red/blue glasses?
IMAX 3D technology employs superior
polarized glasses technology.
One key factor behind the magic
of IMAX 3D is the implementation
of dual filmstrip technology.
This technology is far superior
to the old fashioned "red-blue"
anaglyphic 3D, which combines
left- and right- eye images
onto a single strip of film,
compromising sharpness and colour.
IMAX 3D technology eliminates
this compromise and enhances
the images by not only using
the world's largest film format
(15/70mm), but also by using
two separate strips of film
for both image capture and projection.
Is
every IMAX movie 3D?
IMAX movies can be in 2D and
3D. Be sure to check with the
theatre to determine if the
film is in 2D or 3D.
Is
IMAX showing Hollywood films
in 3D format?
To date, IMAX has not reformatted
any Hollywood films into IMAX
3D format. However, IMAX does
have research and development
efforts focused on developing
this technology. In the meantime,
we will continue to release
Hollywood event films that have
been digitally re-mastered into
IMAX's format using proprietary
IMAX DMRÒ technology.
IMAX DMR films provide a powerful
and immersive cinematic experience.
Can
I watch an IMAX 3D movie at
home?
The IMAX ExperienceÒ
is made possible by the combination
of the world's most powerful
projector that projects the
world's largest film frames
onto giant screens that can
be up to eight stories high
using 30,000 watts of light.
The 3D images are complemented
by 12,000 watts of uncompressed
digital surround sound. Some
IMAX 3D movies are available
on DVD format, such as IMAX's
latest hit SPACE STATION 3D,
and are compatible with specialized
home theatre 3D viewing devices.
What
will the next IMAX 3D movie
be?
There are several IMAX 3D films
currently in development. The
newest IMAX 3D space film, Magnificent
Desolation, recently began production
and will be released to IMAX
theatres in 2005. Magnificent
Desolation, which is being produced
by Playtone in association with
IMAX, will chronicle men walking
on the moon and feature narration
by Tom Hanks.
Which
is the best seat to sit in to
experience IMAX 3D?
The 3D images in an IMAXÒ
theatre will reach out at you
no matter where you sit, making
every seat the best seat in
the house.
How
long is the movie?
A typical IMAX 3D movie is about
40 minutes in length.
